One of the things you can do is not get a beast lair or dormitory for a while. It's kind of important to get your base secure first. Get a training room and train your keeper for a while, as well as getting a library so you can get sorcery and maybe advanced sorcery. Send imps out to check out ? areas in the mountains around you to see if one of them is maybe a cache of weapons and rats. Or maybe a few orcs or vampires. Once you're a bit more secure, you can get a beast lair going. 🙂
Yeah, first time was a shock to me, I thought I'd conquered them all and sent in my imps to pillage and got a message that imp was killed by an elf.
I second the watching of Nat20s videos. That being said, you can go into the creature tab (second tab), and create a group from there and then you can command the first one and they all follow you.
For defense, it's really important to plan your dungeon in advance. Know that some of them (the dragons in particular) can fly, so if you have an open source of water from outside the dungeon that can function as an open path for them. I like to have a single point of entry into my dungeon, usually make a very long _____ shape to a T or L and then the dungeon is off of that point. Then I can set traps along that long path and usually have my training room just on the other side of the T or L intersection – most of your creatures are going to hang out there training. Then when the humans or lizards or dwarfs attack, they are coming right into a training room full of your guys.
He did say that was a something he was thinking about implementing. I think it would be good to have levels of difficulty, like on easy they gave you that message and were a bit more lenient about it, only attacking if you took out X peasants. While medium difficulty you didn't get the message and they were more likely to attack (maybe about as much as they are currently), and hard they just came at you if you even glance at a peasant the wrong way. 🙂
I've had it happen a few times where I've dug right into the mountain, created storage, created training area, had my keeper train to level 7 or 8. Made a library and boom, knights attack. No attacking cows or horses or peasants. I've also had a few where I've slaughtered pretty indiscriminately and nothing attacked me. I figured out pretty quick that those peasants could be the trigger, but I've altered my play style and didn't really change anything. I wonder if some other attack (lizardmen or dragon) attacking peasants is triggering it? Or maybe a tree spirit that you've created by chopping too much wood? Just wondering if those attacks could also cause it.
I have never used ghosts to attack before. I just leave them in the ritual room. I wonder if they would be good on defense? I normally don't have much of a problem with defense by the time I get the ritual room going. 🙂
I tend to go for a 5×5 library in a 7×7 room. That allows me to learn everything available. It'd be cool to add some stuff to the top of that, but that's for a much further release I'm sure. 🙂
I tend to build 5×7 or so training room and increase it as time goes on. It usually ends up being 5×11. Gold I never get more that 3×3 or 2×3 or so. Doesn't really need it. Storage is always about 5×11.
Manufacturies I make 4 4×4 rooms near the storage area – attached to each other and to the storage room. That way I get 4 100% squares and that seems to work out very well.
I've never noticed anything with claimed tiles vs normally dug tiles. You can still build most things on there. I wasn't able to build traps on hallways dug by other things however.
Yeah, that part sucks. There tends to be some sort of pattern to who attacks you and when. I haven't found it out, but I have found that delaying building things as long as possible helps. Once you have a beast lair, those beasts go off and attack things. Maybe those things then retaliate and attack you.
Awesome. 🙂
yeah, it was your streams that got me hooked initially. Now I want to try the roaming keeper and see if that works at all. I tried a few times, but got clobbered by a dragon trying to steal a nice sword, then by an elven archer I didn't see until it was over. 🙂
That would be fantastic. I alter what I'm doing a little bit from game to game, trying to figure out if something I do causes it to happen, but last game literally I'd mined enough for a largish training area and got enough trees for a 4×5 library and a 5×5 beast lair. I'd started mining some more and hear that the humans are coming. I hadn't even gotten a bear or werewolf yet to defend myself, so just turned the speed on fast and watched them destroy my imps on their way to my library. I'd gotten enough mana to learn crafting. If I can get a nice defensive area to build my dungeon, and get enough time to build up a bit, I am pretty happy, even when I usually lose soon after that. But when it happens at the start of the game it gets frustrating.
One thing I think would be interesting or fun would be to have levels of well, not diplomacy perhaps, but make it so that the dragons go hunting the dwarfs or cyclops goes after the lizardmen. Or the two human tribes attack each other or gang up on the lizards instead of on me all the time. 🙂 It might be interesting to be able to forge an alliance with the dwarfs, or elfs. Or bribe the cyclops with mushrooms to attack the humans. 🙂
I keep dying due to lvl 17 human knights coming and attacking me before I've even got an army. Or even if I do have a few vampires and werewolves, they are level 10ish/12ish and get walked all over. This last one I hadn't even gotten my library fully built yet. I've won 1 time, though technically it should be 2 more, the game crashed on me at least two times as I was winning. 🙂
